How to pick a needle out of a haystack

June 1, 2009

So you want to get started in Internet Marketing? What products should you sell? What affiliate programs should you join? Is there a certain category or niche that is better to get into than others?

Well the answer to these questions and all your others is an astounding YES! LOL

There is a ton of information out there that talks about researching your niche, finding the profitable niches, finding the profitable products, and many more. A few tools I use to do my market reasearch are SpyFu, Google Keyword tool, and Market Samurai.

SpyFu is a free tool. It is one of the best free keyword research tools centering around Pay Per Click. Using this tool you can look at the top 100 most popular niche markets, or simply type a keyword into the search box and voila you have the stats of the term including the approximate value of the cost per click and number of clicks per day. You also get the Search Volume and the advertisers that are using that term. I think the SEO Top 100 list is the best place to start. This tool is most effective if you will be running Pay Per Click campaigns, or centering a website around a specific niche.

Check out this video that talks about using SpyFu.

Google’s Keyword tool is of course free. You can access it within Google Adwords. Using this tool you can search for ideas by entering a few words or phrase into the search box, enter the CAPTCHA, and click the Get keyword ideas button. After a few moments your related keywords along with search volumes are displayed.

Google also has another tool called Search-based Keyword Tool. Simply enter your search term or phrase and click the Find button. I found some really great uses for this tool and internet marketing. This is a really neat blog post and video I recently came accross. You HAVE to check this one out.

You should get some really great ideas from this Niche Business Idea Generator post.

The guys who wrote this post, have their own market reasearch tool called Market Samurai. Although this tool is not free, if you are serious about doing market research, this is the tool you want to have. Tons and tons of data to analyze and saves you a lot of time over manual data research. I highly reccommend this tool. There is a 12 day trial available.

I hope you go and check out some of these tools. In some future posts I will be discussing these tools in a little more detail and how to evaluate the data.

I really appreciate that you keep coming back to my site, it's loyal people like you that make what I do worth it. If you have any questions feel free to email me. Oh and since you obviously like our site it'd be great if you could share it with a friend... They'll love you for it!

Hey

Great looking blog – I’m on the 30 day challenge too.

I always use google keyword tools, but I’ll try the samauri – it sounds cool anyway

Hey Pam,

Those are a nice mix of mainstream and semi-ninja resources – especially Market Samurai, which I used for a trial period last year and loved! Haven’t made the jump to the full version yet, but I’m getting close…
